Ian's (almost) daily recap of what spikes my interest

I spend a considerable amount of time online since I work in front of a computer. This blog is supposed to basically summarize what i think is interesting. Do with it what you'd like. Ian

More treats from David

WMVY in I-Tunes

For those of you that have spent any time on the cape cod and islands,
WMVY radio is the channel to have for genuinely great music. You've
always been able to stream their music from http://www.wmvy.com but not
they've taken the necessary next step and integrated their stream right
into I-Tunes radio. It's really slick. Just go to the radio station
section of I-Tunes and navigate to the Americana section. I've been
cranking to this all day in the office.

Moleskine

So, I'm in a bit of a dilemma.  I can't figure out what system I want to use to keep my life organized.  I started with a plain spiral bound notebook and just started writing everything down in there.  THat went the way of a more fancy grid lined book that I picked up in Germany.  I still use that for my work notes.  However, it seems now that life is getting more insane and I can't be carrying around a large notebook.  So I started using the hipster PDA that I really like, except the fact that it's designed to be disposable.  Also, I end up writing down everything and now I have 20+ items to do on my top card and i'm feeling totally overwhelmed.

Yesterday in the mail my traditional moleskin notebook came, the 3.5 inch by 5 inch model.  I love this little book, but alas, it's just a tad bit too big and the cover is too hard so I can't really slip it into my back pocket.  Hemingway used to use this thing and I suspect that he used his jacket breast pocket.  Frankly, I try to minimize the amount of time that I wear a blazer so that doesn't work.  I'm in a bit of a bind.  What to do?  What to do?  Any suggestions?

Hipster PDA

http://www.43folders.com/2004/09/introducing_the.html

Last night at the bar I was showing off my adoption of the Hipster PDA that 43 Folders writes about above.  At first blush, since I currently carry blackberry AND a mobile, I thought this would be too much to handle.  However, the more I use this system the more convinced I am that it makes sense.  I already carry a pen wherever I go so it's the next logical step -- I always have a piece of paper to write on and it's less intrusive than creating a new note in the blackberry.  I just can't seem to integrate the blackberry and the mobile just yet -- neither of which I can live without.

Kate's Blog

My girlfriend Kate now has her blog. Check it at

This should be interesting. We're going to probably end up competing
against each other in content!

Nintendo Themes Sang in Acapella Form

I don't even know what to say about this except that it's very, very clever.  For anybody who was in middle/high school in the late 80s to early 90s, this mish mash of tunes will be familiar.

Amazing Juggling Dance Kid

Not that there is any intellectual value to this post, but this kid who is able to juggle and play the hard mode of this video game sure gains my respect.

Nanotechnology Podcast

Some of you might be wondering why there has been spotty posting on this
blog. I'm proud to announce the arrival of
http://www.nyls.blogs.com/nano/ , a blog that discusses nanotechnology.
As you can see I am the nanoeconomy editor. I am scheduled for my very
own podcast to occur over the next few weeks. The subject of the
podcast will be "Assessing Venture Capital Returns for Efficient
Investing in Nanotechnology". I'm sure you're all very interested.
Well, even if you're not, I'll make sure you have access to the link.

Since some of you might not be aware of podcasting, I think I'll make
sure to introduce this in a subsequent posting.

Fancy Nokia

Nokia finally released the stylish 7280 that sports no buttons, simply an Ipod like scroll wheel.  The purpose of this phone is to be able to use it when partying at night.  You transfer the important numbers you need from your computer and slip this little baby into your pocket all at the same time avoiding that unsightly bulge that plagues many of us.  Oh, it also features a camera, bluetooth, and a display that doubles as a mirror when deactivated.  That will certainly let me determine if I have enough glue in my hair at any given moment.  Purchase the sucker at www.nokiausa.com for a mere (gasp) $600!

Intenet Hunting Continued

So it seems that article that I wrote about a while back is become a more thorny issue.  Reprsentative Davis of Virginia has introduced the following bill, HR 1558, http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=109_cong_bills&docid=f:h1558ih.txt.pdf , that seeks to prohibit certain computer-assisted remote hunting, punishable by up to 5 years in the slammer.

I particularly like the definition of this:  "...any use of a computer or any other device, equipment, or software, to allow a person remotely to control the aiming and discharge of a weapon so as to kill or injure an animal while not in the physical presence of the targeted animal..."

Here is another article tracking the issue:  http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3497821

Subject: RE: Thursday

Guys, I have a girlfriend now, and responsibilities. We are planning on having some quality time together and I don’t need to be out drinking and chasing loose women anymore. I’m just not that kind of guy now. I’m settled, responsible, domesticated and emasculated. Plus I want to be in bed by 9:30 so I can be up in the morning to have breakfast with Sarah and go for a jog before the sun comes up. This weekend we’ll be heading out to look at wallpaper and station wagons.

She Loves NY

Check out this web page that dishes (no pun intended) some insight into
the NYC restaurant scene.

Starbucks Alternative

This web site allows you to search for coffee shops in your area. The
difference in this one is that it only focuses on independent coffee
shops and it specifically excludes starbucks outlets!

http://guide.tenuae.com/living/dubai/the_world_islands.php

Brought to you by the folks of the Palm in Dubai, an island community arranged like the continents of the world just off the coast of Dubai.  My initial reaction was to laugh until I saw this video that indicates a bit more effort was put into this.  Too bad Dubai is so far away from anything I want to visit.  Oh, and too bad the price tag is around $6.5mm just for the island.  I wonder what the condo costs are for the private security service and the water taxi!?
