Google Removes the Accelerator

So the tool that's supposed to make surfing faster thanks to their rock solid network of computers.  Or is it rock solid?  They've pulled the tool citing capacity issues.  I think that's crap.  If you've installed the tool, uninstall it and wait until they've resolved their "capacity issues".

Sony T-Series Reviewed

For anybody who is interested, here's the write-up from the Sony product
release at BED last night. This is in response to this previous post.

The product is in fact a new laptop (Windows based of course) where Sony
partnered up with Cingular to offer EDGE, where available, Wifi and
Bluetooth, integrated into the lappy. Cingular helped write the
software that allows the user to toggle using the F1 key between the 3.
This feature worked remarkably well, even after I shut the machine down
to find out where the SIM card goes. There is a little spring loaded
slot which is revealed after removing the battery. After reboot it
quickly found cingular's network and logged on.

The device is small with a 10.6 inch screen with XBRITE and optional
dual layer DVD+-RW drive which was a nice touch. It weighs 3.04 pounds
and is an inch thick, so the portability feature is nice. The keyboard
is tiny. I had a hard time adjusting from the keyboard on my x40 which
already feel slightly cramped.

They had all the attendees distributed at various beds (the place
requires lying on mattresses rather than sitting at tables) where we
each received one of these laptops to test. Then we played a silly game
where we instant messaged (using windows messenger) with characters on
various projectors and had to guess from what location they were
chatting with us from. The winner, sadly not my bed, won a sony
ericsson[ ]. The idea was to show that the people were chatting with
us from remote locations. My guy claimed to be on the jersey shore
though I'm sure he was in his office since they openly admitted the
footage they were using in the projectors had been previously recorded.

The machine is nice, purely by virtue of its size. I certainly enjoyed
the size though I wouldn't purchase it because of the integrated GSM
feature. Some guy from Cingular did a song and dance about the special
promotion they're having that gives new purchasers a free 30 days if you
sign up for a 1 year contract. The price plans are as follows:$49.99
for 50MB of data and $79.95 for unlimited. That adds up to $959.40 a
year in service charges which isn't bad if the firm is picking up the
tab but pretty pricey when returning to reality. It basically amounts
to half the cost of the laptop which, as I understand from one of their
reps scurrying around the floor, costs $2,040 for the CDRW version and
$2,[ ]. When is Cingular going to come up with plans that make
sense? That is a story for another post on a different site.

One of the other things I did while there and I forgot to clear my
history before leaving, was run a speed test using DSL reports. I
emailed the page to myself if you'd like to see it but the speed I got,
in the middle of north Chelsea, was 82kbps down and 42 up, neatly
sandwiched between "ugh" and "bearable".

Sadly I was unable to take any decent pictures using my camera, though
you can see the machine at sonystyle starting tomorrow I believe,
available for online purchase for a month before being released to
retailers. I believe the available colors are indigo, silver and red,
though I might be mistaken.

Newest Bigfoot Video?

I mean COME ON?! What are you people smoking out there> Some guy a few
months ago claimed to have video of this yeti like creature up in
Manitoba but was so paranoid about people swiping his rights that he
would let the tape out of his possession. So he would only let people
view the video from this apartment which resulted in lines of people
filing through his living room. This lasted until he was able to
negotiate a deal for the rights of the tape, which apparently he was
able to do. So the long awaited broadcast happened last week and I've
attached snippets from "A current Affair" or whatever that show is that
talks about it and I'm appalled. I'm not sure what's scarier, the
resolution on the camera (how convenient), the network's presentation of
the story, or the chick and the dude towards the end of the clip.
Yikes. Regardless, I still don't think one of these things exist.

Sony Special Event at "BED"

K. was able to score tickets for this event Tuesday night so we're going.  I am particularly excited for several reasons.   Hopefully they'll have some pretty sweet stuff in the gift bags. Seriously, I wonder what the reason for the event is -- maybe it is in fact what engadget reported previously where they speculate the release of   Vaio PCG-4E1L that integrates wifi with GSM technology.  In any event, I'll try and snap some photos of whatever their surprise is and post them (maybe even on the fly if it is in fact an integrated GSM laptop).

It's a 2 hour event folks so all you study critics simmer down.  it's a study break dammit!

Lastly, the funny thing about this ad is that their ad team decided to throw in an older model powerbook to the photo promoting a sony machine!  Ahhh sooo funny.  Either it's going to be a huge announcement involving Apple licensing their software (highly unlikely),or it's a major screw-up on the part of whomever they hired.  Tragically, I suspect it's the latter.

The Chronicles of Narnia

I grew up reading (and re-reading the books in this series). They've finally come out with a movie. Let's hope this gives Harry Potter a run for its money! Check out the trailer that came out this weekend:

Google Web Accelerator

I'm not sure if this is good or bad yet, but google has released web accelerator which routes information over their servers and claims to increase speed through processing and compression.  I'm thinking about giving it a whirl, though if I stop and think about it, not only will they read all my email, know all my web searches, follow where I travel using their maps, see who visits my site with their ads, they will also know what web pages I read.  On the other hand, if I can get over google privacy matters, I hear this handy app also make a decent anonomyzer which could be helpful in different contexts, natch!

Traffic Maps

Yahoo Traffic has a new feature that shows traffic maps for any given
zip code. This feature is really going to come in handy this summer.
You can pull up your maps here:

http://maps.yahoo.com/traffic

Also, since I aggregate using RSS feeds, you can enter the following
link into your RSS reader with this link:

http://maps.yahoo.com/traffic.rss?csz=10013&mag=4&minsev=2

Edit the URL to add your information:
-make sure you change the zip code after csz=
-mag is the level of 'magnification' (3 = 4 miles, 4 = 10 miles, 5 = 40
miles)
-minserv is the minimum severity of the traffic condition (1 = minor, 2
= moderate, 4 = major, 5 = critical.)

I use newsgator.com to manage all my feeds. This one is my newest
addition.

Podcasting Hits Sirius

Everybody's jumping on the podcasting bandwagon, even cash hemorrhaging Sirius. According to the NY times, they've signed Adam Curry, Podcasting trailblazer. I started listening to his podcasts when they were about 2 months old and he was living in Amsterdam. He's now in the UK though currently in NYC at Sirius' offices.

Here's the link to the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/02/business/media/02SIRIUS.html?ex=1272686400&en=742729572081f9b8&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss

I wonder if he'll make the annual geek dinner in Grand Central tonight. I so wish I could make it to this event but I'm tied up. Rumor has it that Dave Winer, Adam's partner in crime in developing Podcasting, will also be attending. Links to the geek dinner can be found here: http://www.micropersuasion.com/2005/04/scoble_rubel_ho.html
